In this blog post, we will be discussing the life of one of Honduras most famous writers, Guillermo Varela Osorio. Varela was a writer and journalist whose work is a considered a foundational genre in Honduran literature. In this blog post, we will discuss some of the works written by his and some important moments in their lives. Varela was born in San Pedro Sula on December 13th 1931, into a very influential family that had been involved with the military since it's inception. Despite being recognized as "El gran escritor de Honduras," he did not have an easy life growing up due to his parents being opposites to one another. His mother was a strong willed and passionate woman who worked as a volunteer nurse at the local hospital. In contrast, his father was a very introverted and reserved man who worked as a doctor. This can be seen as he grew up being able to speak both Spanish and English languages. He attended the Colegio Seminario Cristiano for elementary school, where he first began writing poetry at a young age. He used to go around town with a copy of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery, which is said influenced his work greatly. Other forms of art that he found a passion for were baseball and basketball. After his high school years were over, he attended the Tegucigalpa campus of the University where he studied law for a year. During this time period, however, it became apparent that Varela's heart was in his writings and not books on law. In 1948, at the age of 17, he began his first work titled "Los Debates" which focused on political criticism from a right-wing viewpoint. After four years of writing in the newspaper, he left for Guatemala where he continued to write for newspapers and magazines under the pen name of Guillermo Vasconcelos. On January 20, 1954, Varela was arrested by the police on charges of "counterrevolutionary activities." He was imprisoned in El Porvenir military prison where he spent time reading books that Ignacio Ellacuria had written. These books are said to have played a huge part in insuring that his political views were left leaning even after moving back to Honduras. He also began writing again while he was imprisoned. Upon his release, he began writing for different newspapers and magazines such as: El Heraldo, La Tribuna and La Prensa. Despite his fame and growing wealth, he decided to stay humble and continued to live in the same little apartment that he was born in. His writings were said to have been very powerful and influential on the new generation of writers due to their depictions of poverty in Honduras. Some have even said that the works of Varela are what led to Honduras being recognized as a "writer's country." Varela died on January 26th 1999 in Tegucigalpa due to heart failure at the age of 68. cfa1e77820
